My organization is currently building a page with an area to display content to member based on data attributes. (Custom targeting) We have a situation where we would like to place a banner or a video in the same area of the page depending on the targeting. For example, we would build a campaign that displays Banner X if the user is under 30 but Video Y if the user is over 30. Is this possible?

    Hi Ben,

Well, the built-in video support that we have is designed for the typical use case where you have content videos and you want to have video ads play before, between or after them like a TV commercial.

What you're trying to do is quite a bit different from that, but there is a way to accomplish it. Your video would need be to encoded as a Flash .swf file. This will allow you to set it up as a Flash banner so that it can be run in the same position as other types of banners.

There are a couple of things to be aware of here. One is that the SWF file may end up being quite large if your video is high resolution or plays for a long duration. You may need to reduce the video resolution, length and quality to get the file down to an acceptable size. An alternative is to have the SWF file politely load or stream the larger video file from an external source.

The other downside is that you can only track views and clicks on a video banner that's set up this way. You won't be able to track deeper metrics such as first quartile, midpoint, third quartile and play completion. Those metrics are only provided by VAST compliant video players. I don't know of any players, however, than can play a standalone VAST video ad. They all require you to combine the video ad with at least one content video.
